Hazelvine

This modest-sized shrub grows up to 4 feet (1.2 meters) tall and lives for decades, with the oldest known specimen being around 114 years old. It is very resistant to disease and destructive insect infestation.

It has several branched, crooked stems covered in thin, smooth, brown-green bark, and the wood inside is white with black speckles.

The branches trail down to the ground with dozens of twigs that and are covered with sparse amounts of large, wide, leaves with serrated edges. The leaves themselves are found in sky blue and hazel varieties, frail and soft.

In late spring it produces large amounts of small, faded green blossoms with spiral shaped petals. They are sturdy and have a delicate scent that smells like pot-purri.

In early autumn small long, narrow fruits ripen. The fuzzy dark orange skin is delicate and edible when roasted; it is bitter, and the very soft blood red flesh is savoury and syrupy. The green seed is very large and sits at the top of the fruit.
