Red Petal Vine

Flower type: Biennial (Stores water in the thickened base of its stem)

This short flower grows up to 6 inches (15 cm) tall. Its red stem is thin, and the huge, pink-red leaves are dark gray-green on the underside and are needle-like with tattered edges. The leaves alternate on the stem from the base up to about halfway.

2 to 8 small flowers grow on alternate sides up the length of the stem. The flowers are 3 cm (1.2 inches) wide, with red petals and a bronze central disk. The flower head is largely flat with dozens of tightly layered narrow petals. They are very delicate.

It has an intense scent that smells like vomit, and it has an average amount of pollen. It is pollinated by a small species of bird and is ignored by most insect species.

All parts of the bine are edible.

The colour changes depends on whether the soil is acidic or alkaline.
