Burgundy Sunflower

This big flower grows up to 3.9 feet (1.2 meters) tall. Its burgundy stem is thick and splits into several branching stems a quarter of the way up, and the small, gray-green leaves are wide with smooth edges. Many leaves grow at the base of the stem, and a pair of leaves grow at the base of the flower head.

1 to 3 tiny flowers grow on alternate sides up the length of the stem. The flowers are 26 cm (10.2 inches) wide, with silver petals on the lower layer and peach petals decorated with indigo dots on the inner layer. The central disk is blood red. The flower head is made up of several petals in raised layers. They are hardy.

It has a mildly strong scent that smells like onion, and it has a fair amount of pollen; it does not cause any allergic reactions. It is pollinated by the wind, but is also particularly attractive to butterflies.
