Crimson Trumpet
Flower type: Biennial (Stores water in its leaves)This short flower grows up to 3 inches (8 cm) tall. Its lime green stems grow in bunches of 7 and are very thin with a curved tip, and the small, crimson or indigo leaves are broad, flat with toothed edges. The leaves alternate on the stem from about halfway up, up to the flower head.
Two medium-sized flowers sit at the end of each stem. The flowers are 10 cm (3.9 inches) wide, with grey petals that gradient shift to copper on the outer edge. The central disk is dark purple. The flower head is shaped like a trumpet with 10 raised, round-tipped petals. They fall easily.
It has a delicate scent that smells like garlic, and it has very little pollen; it does not cause many allergic reactions. It is a self-pollinator, but is also visited by one species of insect in particular.
