Copperberry

Fruit Tree type: Deciduous (Stores water in its stem)

This short fruit tree grows up to 5 feet (1.5 meters) tall and lives for up to 35 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 58 years old. It is very susceptible to disease and insect infestation.

It has a sturdy, straight trunk covered in hard, cracked, copper-coloured bark, and inside, the light wood is silver.

The branches trail down across the ground and are covered with sparse amounts of giant, broad, flat leaves with irregular edges. The leaves themselves are yellow on the sides and black at the center.

In early spring, it produces a handful of small, bright green blossoms with pleated petals. They are hardy and have a delicate scent that smells like pine needles.

In early summer it produces small, oval fruit. The rough lilac skin is stretchy and bitter, and the soft yellow flesh is salty and juicy. The blood red seeds are small and are dotted around on the skin of the fruit.

The roots are fine and grow in a large web, and overall the tree is sturdy, flexible, and difficult to uproot or break.

Forests of this species feature trees spaced far apart, with patches of undergrowth between them.

The colour changes depends on whether the soil is acidic or alkaline.
