Bloodfruit Tree

Fruit Tree type: Deciduous (Stores water in its stem)

This modest-sized fruit tree grows up to 15 feet (4.6 meters) tall and lives for up to 40 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 63 years old. It is very resistant to disease but is susceptible to destructive insect infestation.

It has a narrow, twisting trunk covered in thick, silky, silver and white bark, and inside, the dense wood is brown.

The branches trail down to the ground and are covered with large amounts of giant, sickle shaped leaves with wavy edges. The leaves themselves are generally turquoise.

In early spring, it produces copious amounts of large, green blossoms with V-shaped shaped petals. They fall easily and have a faint scent that smells like rotten meat.

In early autumn it produces very large, perforated fruit. The smooth blood red skin is stretchy and savoury, and the slightly crunchy white flesh is sour and sticky. The cream seeds are large and are bunched at the bottom of the fruit.

The roots are shallow and grow straight down, and overall the tree is rigid and brittle.

Forests of this species feature the trees packed together densely, with grassy ground between them.

The sap is beige.
The leaves are overwhelmingly toxic, and very savoury.
