It is short, growing up to 2 inches (5 cm) tall. It forms in small clumps and they spread and grow quickly, and is overwhelmingly flexible; it can easily endure flooding and draughts.
When mature, emerald heart-shaped capsules grow at the end of long, lime green sporophytes, eventually opening up during the late summer to release hundred of spores.

The bark is frequently covered in moss.
