It takes 16 months for the green stems to mature, by which point they sometimes have a diameter of 2 inches (5 cm) and are smooth and woody.

The long, tapering, sticky leaves reach up to 1.2 feet (36 cm) in length. They are deep purple and pink, and have ripped edges.

During late spring, the bine produces thick bunches of tiny blue flowers.
