Blueberry Tree

Fruit Tree type: Deciduous (Grows along the ground or other low surfaces.)

This short fruit tree grows up to 9 feet (2.7 meters) tall and lives for up to 40 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 59 years old. It is very resistant to destructive insect infestation but susceptible to disease.

It has a slender, twisting trunk covered in hard, rough, light brown bark, and inside, the very dense wood is black with white speckles.

The tangled mess of branches are short, rigid and upright and are covered with copious amounts of tiny, circular leaves with serrated edges. The leaves themselves are blood red at the bottom and slate with muted green zig-zags at the top.

In early spring, it produces many bunches of tiny, gentle blue blossoms with many layers of petals with a trumpet-shaped floral cup. They are very delicate and have a faint scent that smells like burning wood.

In early autumn it produces small, long, straight fruit. The clammy azure skin is delicate and edible when roasted; it is savoury, and the soft lime flesh is sour and very juicy. The slate seed is small and is in the centre of the fruit.

The roots are long and grow straight down, and overall the tree is sturdy, flexible, and difficult to uproot or break.

Forests of this species feature the trees packed together, with patches of undergrowth between them.

It usually houses a colony of beneficial insects.
