Fruit Tree type: Deciduous (Stores water in the thickened base of its stem)

This modest-sized fruit tree grows up to 13 feet (4.0 meters) tall and lives for up to 15 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 30 years old. It is not very resistant to disease and destructive insect infestation.

It has a slender, straight trunk covered in ridged, copper-coloured bark, and inside, the dense wood is black.

The small bunches of branches are short, rigid and upright and are covered with handfuls of huge, fan-like leaves with smooth edges. The leaves themselves are found in white, blue and blue varieties.

In early spring, it produces thousands of medium-sized, orange blossoms with long, tapering petals. They detach easily and have a delicate scent that smells like skunk spray.

In early autumn it produces large, stiff, pointed fruit. The smooth purple skin is thick and edible when boiled; it is sweet, and the soft black flesh is sweet and sticky. The grey seeds are small and are bunched at the top of the fruit.

The roots are shallow and grow straight down, and overall the tree is sturdy and difficult to uproot.

Forests of this species feature the trees packed together densely, with the space between them filled with thick undergrowth.
