This small leaf succulent grows up to 10 feet (3.0 meters) tall. The very thick stem is lime green, and is dotted with small blood red spines. The toothed-edged, thick leaves are a shade of orange or peach that gradient shifts to red at the top. Large amounts of them grow from the base in no particular order. The leaves are delicate, but are very difficult to pull away.

It is quick growing, taking 4 months to reach maturity. Once mature, and only under the right conditions, a handful of flowers, with solid black petals and a dark blue central disk, grow at the top, reappearing after 10 years, but only when the conditions are right again. The flower head is an uncoordinated mess of up to 10 petals. It has a delicate scent that smells like old books.

The leaf succulent's skin is extremely thick, the intense purple flesh is slimy, and the magenta sap is thin.
