Brownfern
Shrub type: Coniferous (Stores water in its stem)This colossal shrub grows up to 12 feet (3.7 meters) tall and lives for around 16 years. It is very resistant to disease and destructive insect infestation.
It has numerous slender, wonky stems covered in rough, brown bark, and the wood inside is light brown.
The branches trail down towards the ground with dozens of twigs that and are covered with handfuls of large, needle-like, leaves with tattered edges. The leaves themselves are either green or caramel, with olive dots, delicate and waxy.
It produces a thick sheet of large, purple flowers with long, tapering petals with a tube-like floral cup. They are sturdy and have a strong scent that smells like honeysuckle. In mid-autumn it forms medium-sizedblack, winged seeds that float and land far away.
It is suitable for making strong rope
The colour changes depends on whether the soil is acidic or alkaline.
