Caramel Starflower

Flower type: Biennial (Stores water in its stem)

This short flower grows up to 4 inches (10 cm) tall. Its yellow-green stems grow in bunches of 6 and are thin with a curved tip, and the huge, caramel leaves are fan-like with tattered edges. Many leaves grow at the base of the stem, and more leaves grow in pairs along the length of the stem.

5 to 9 small flowers grow on alternate sides up the length of the stem. The flowers are 15 cm (5.9 inches) wide, with petals that are generally hazel; each flower tends to be a variation of this colour. The flower head is made up of 9 petals; the lower layer of petals are flat, while the upper layers form a tight star. They are sturdy.

It has a delicate scent that smells like cheese, and it has an average amount of pollen; it can cause severe allergic reactions. It is a self-pollinator, but is also particularly attractive to bees.

It is suitable for making strong rope
