Bloodfern

This big shrub grows up to 9 feet (2.7 meters) tall and lives for around 14 years. It is somewhat resistant to disease and destructive insect infestation.

It has several wide, angular stems covered in waxy, brown-green bark, and the wood inside is burgundy.

The branches trail down to the ground with dozens of twigs that and are covered with copious amounts of miniature, fan-like, leaves with tattered edges. The leaves themselves are solid blood red with florescent yellow edges, rigid and leathery.

In late summer it produces thick bunches of medium-sized, green blossoms with kidney-shaped shaped petals. They fall easily and have an intensely strong scent that smells like a woman.

In mid-autumn small long, straight fruits ripen. The waxy hazel skin is tough and edible when roasted; it is savoury, and the soft black flesh is sweet and salty and very juicy. The dark brown seed is small and sits at the top of the fruit.
