Bluebell Fern

Flower type: Biennial (Evergreen - keeps its leaves all year round)

This short flower grows up to 1 inch (3 cm) tall. Its moss green stem is wispy and splits into many branching stems a quarter of the way up, and the huge, bold blue leaves are long, narrow with tattered edges. A pair of leaves grow at the base of the flower head.

5 to 9 tiny flowers grow on alternate sides up the length of the stem. The flowers are 4 cm (1.6 inches) wide, with sky blue petals on the lower layer and crimson petals decorated with bronze dots on the inner layer. The central disk is bold yellow. The flower head is shaped like a bowl made up of many raised, narrow petals. They are sturdy.

It has an intensely strong scent that smells like coffee, and it has an average amount of pollen; it can cause severe allergic reactions. It is pollinated by a small species of bird, but is enjoyed by several specific types of insect.

It only grows on the most fertile lands.
It is possible to grow it from cuttings.
