Bluefruit Tree

Fruit Tree type: Deciduous (Stores water in its leaves)

This large fruit tree grows up to 40 feet (12.2 meters) tall and lives for up to 35 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 41 years old. It is very susceptible to disease and insect infestation.

It has a thick, straight trunk covered in fine, waxy, yellow bark, and inside, the flexible wood is black with white speckles.

The branches are long and thick and are covered with copious amounts of large, long, narrow leaves with wavy edges. The leaves themselves are either white, or subtle blue with turquoise dots.

In early spring, it produces thousands of large, grey blossoms with 2 pointed petals with a tube-like floral cup. They fall easily and have a delicate scent that smells like meat.

In early winter it produces small, long, narrow fruit. The waxy caramel skin is stretchy and edible when roasted; it is extremely salty, and the very soft subtle blue flesh is sweet and savoury and dry. The beige seeds are small and are scattered throughout the fruit.

The roots are shallow and grow straight down, and overall the tree is sturdy and rigid.

Forests of this species feature the trees packed together densely, with the space between them filled with thick undergrowth.

The stems are covered in large spikes.
