Bloodberry

Shrub type: Coniferous (Stores water in the thickened base of its stem)

This small shrub grows up to 1 foot (30.5 cm) tall and lives for around 95 years. It is very resistant to disease and destructive insect infestation.

It has numerous thick, curved stems covered in smooth, dark brown bark, and the wood inside is burgundy-brown.

The branches are short and slender with dozens of twigs that and are covered with small amounts of miniature, perforated, leaves with ripped edges. The leaves themselves are found in blood red and blood red varieties, robust and crispy.

In early spring it produces many medium-sized, orange blossoms with broad, flat petals. They detach easily and have a faint scent that smells like a newborn baby.

In late winter spherical fruits ripen. The soft cream skin is delicate and sweet, and the slightly crunchy dark purple flesh is sour and very juicy. The pastel yellow seeds are small and are scattered throughout the fruit.

It comes in 7 varieties, each with a different leaf colour.

It grows well in the sun and full shade.
