It takes 2 months for the brown stems to mature, by which point they have often fused together into ropes with a diameter of 3 cm (1.2 inches) and are rough and prickly.
The 9 pointed, fuzzy leaves reach up to 5 inches (13 cm) in length. They are solid dark brown with slate splotches, and have smooth edges.
During late spring, the vine produces many giant turquoise flowers.
It is suitable for making strong rope
It is very rare outside of a particular area.
