Burgundy Fruit Tree

Fruit Tree type: Deciduous (Stores water in its leaves)

This large fruit tree grows up to 38 feet (11.6 meters) tall and lives for up to 20 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 43 years old. It is very susceptible to disease and insect infestation.

It has a slender, angular trunk covered in hard, wrinkled, burgundy bark, and inside, the medium-dense wood is mahogany-coloured.

The excessive amount of branches are very short and thin and are covered with large amounts of huge, long, narrow leaves with irregular edges. The leaves themselves are a shade of burgundy that gradient shifts to dark grey at the top.

In early spring, it produces hundreds of large, red blossoms with stiff, pointed petals. They are very delicate and have a powerful scent that smells like an ocean breeze.

In late summer it produces small, perforated fruit. The waxy magenta skin is delicate and edible when boiled; it is sweet and salty, and the slightly crunchy hazel flesh is sweet and syrupy. The slate seed is small and is in the centre of the fruit.

The roots are thick and spread across the surface, as well as underground, and overall the tree is rigid and brittle.

Forests of this species feature trees spaced far apart, with grassy ground between them.

It out-competes most other plants for nutrients and light.
It is difficult to kill and will quickly regrow if cut.
It is suitable for creating flexible, durable textiles
