Its moss green stems grow in bunches of 8 and are wispy and straight, and the large, red leaves are perforated with irregular edges. Many leaves grow at the base of the stem, and more leaves grow in pairs along the length of the stem.
A single large flower sits at the end of the stem. The flowers are 60 cm (23.6 inches) wide, with solid hazel petals and a violet central disk. The flower head is made up of 29 petals; the lower layer of petals are flat, while the upper layers form a tight trumpet. They are sturdy.
It has an overpowering scent that smells like an ocean breeze, and it has lots of pollen; it can cause severe allergic reactions. It is pollinated by insects and is enjoyed by several specific types of insect.
