Burgundy Starflower

Flower type: Biennial (Grows, flowers and dies within one year)

This average-sized flower grows up to 1.9 feet (58 cm) tall. Its pink-red stem is wispy, and the large, burgundy leaves are very narrow and elongated with toothed edges. Many leaves grow at the base of the stem, and a pair of leaves grow at the base of the flower head.

Each stem splits 3 to 7 times; a single large flower grows at the end of each split. The flowers are 13 cm (5.1 inches) wide, with petals that are generally black; each flower tends to be a variation of this colour. The flower head is shaped like a star made up of 20 widely spaced, narrow petals. They are very delicate.

It has a weak scent that smells like candle wax, and it has lots of pollen, but it does not cause many allergic reactions. It is pollinated by a small species of bird, but is also visited by a small species of bird.

It is suitable for making baskets and the like
