Burgundyfern

This small shrub grows up to 1 foot (30.5 cm) tall and lives for decades, with the oldest known specimen being around 140 years old. It is not very resistant to disease and destructive insect infestation.

It has numerous narrow, wonky stems covered in paper-thin, rough, burgundy bark, and the wood inside is pale brown.

The branches are long and thin with dozens of twigs that and are covered with large amounts of miniature, needle-like, leaves with tattered edges. The leaves themselves are solid lime or olive, with blood red zig-zags, flimsy and fuzzy.

In early spring it produces clusters of tiny, dark orange flowers with stiff, pointed petals. They fall easily and have an intense scent that smells like something putrid.
