Copperfruit

This modest-sized fruit tree grows up to 18 feet (5.5 meters) tall and lives for up to 20 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 44 years old. It is somewhat resistant to disease and destructive insect infestation.

It has a stocky, wonky trunk covered in paper-thin, knobbly, black bark, and inside, the very light wood is copper-coloured.

The branches are short, rigid and upright and are covered with thick bunches of large, very thick leaves with wavy edges. The leaves themselves are gold and purple.

In early spring, it produces large amounts of medium-sized, gold blossoms with asymmetrical petals with a bell-shaped floral cup. They are sturdy and have an intensely strong scent that smells like rotten eggs.

In mid-autumn it produces very large, long, tapering fruit. The soft cream skin is tough and savoury, and the very soft grey flesh is bitter and dry. The light brown seeds are large and are bunched at the bottom of the fruit.

The roots are long and grow straight down, and overall the tree is sturdy and rigid.

Forests of this species feature the trees packed together densely, with the space between them filled with thick undergrowth.
