It takes 9 months for the lime green stems to mature, by which point they often have a diameter of 5 inches (13 cm) and are rough and gnarled.

The needle-like, soft leaves reach up to 5 inches (13 cm) in length. They are found in aquamarine, magenta and cyan varieties, and have smooth edges.
