Copperberry

This short fruit tree grows up to 9 feet (2.7 meters) tall and lives for up to 15 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 24 years old. It is very resistant to disease and destructive insect infestation.

It has a flexible, straight trunk covered in waxy, yellow bark, and inside, the dense wood is pine-coloured.

The branches trail down to the ground and are covered with handfuls of huge, perforated leaves with tattered edges. The leaves themselves are found in copper, brown and magenta varieties.

In early spring, it produces a handful of medium-sized, red blossoms with wide petals with a bell-shaped floral cup. They are very delicate and have an intense scent that smells like old books.

In early summer it produces small, oval fruit. The sticky amber skin is peel-able and overwhelmingly savoury, and the crunchy peach flesh is sweet and very juicy. The light brown seed is very large and sits at the top of the fruit.

The roots are shallow and widely spread, and overall the tree is sturdy and difficult to uproot.

Forests of this species feature the trees packed together, with patches of undergrowth between them.
