Crimson Spike Cactus

Succulent type: Stem succulent (Stores water in its stem)

This small cactus grows up to 11 feet (3.4 meters) tall. The perforated stem is pink-red, and is dotted with small crimson spines.

It is quick growing, taking 2 months to reach maturity. Once mature, a handful of flowers, with solid violet petals decorated with green dots and a cyan central disk, grow at the top, reappearing once every 3 years. The flower head is shaped like a bowl with 49 tightly layered, narrow petals. It has a scent that varies in strength that smells like pot-purri.

The cactus's skin is very thick, the blue flesh is smooth, and the cyan sap is thin.

The colour changes depends on whether the soil is acidic or alkaline.
