Crimson Shield Moss

This red moss is commonly found growing in small clumps On rotten logs, and On trees.
It is enormous, growing up to 1.6 feet (48 cm) tall. It forms in extensive patches and they are slow to spread and grow, and is extremely rigid; it burns easily in strong sunlight.
When mature, emerald shield-shaped capsules grow at the end of elongated, lime green sporophytes, eventually opening up during the late summer to release dozens of spores; it does not cause any allergic reactions.
