Copperleaf

Shrub type: Deciduous (Stores water in the thickened base of its stem)

This modest-sized shrub grows up to 2 feet (61.0 cm) tall and lives for decades, with the oldest known specimen being around 100 years old. It is not very resistant to disease and destructive insect infestation.

It has several sturdy, wonky stems covered in silky, copper-coloured bark, and the wood inside is yellow-brown.

The branches are short stubs with hundreds of twigs that and are covered with very large amounts of huge, very thick, leaves with smooth edges. The leaves themselves are either dark brown or dull yellow, with azure streaks, rigid and leathery.

It produces thousands of small, slate flowers with flame-shaped petals with a tube-like floral cup. They detach easily and have a weak scent that smells like lemon. In late winter it forms largehazel seed pods.

Once on fire, it burns very quickly.
