It takes 6 months for the red stems to mature, by which point they often have a diameter of 3 inches (8 cm) and are hard and brittle.
The slender, pointed, smooth leaves reach up to 5 inches (13 cm) in length. They are a shade of copper that gradient shifts to brown at the top, and have smooth edges.
During late spring, the creeper produces thick bunches of large yellow flowers.
