Crimsonpine

This big fruit tree grows up to 36 feet (11.0 meters) tall and lives for up to 15 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 24 years old. It is not very resistant to disease and destructive insect infestation.

It has a thick, curved trunk covered in delicate, smooth, pine-coloured bark, and inside, the dense wood is dark brown.

The small clumps of branches are short, rigid and upright and are covered with small amounts of huge, needle-like leaves with ripped edges. The leaves themselves are crimson at the bottom and turquoise with lilac edges at the top.

In early spring, it produces large amounts of giant, bright yellow blossoms with needle-like petals. They are sturdy and have an intensely strong scent that smells like burning wood.

In late autumn it produces tiny, perforated fruit. The clammy bright yellow skin is tough and edible when boiled; it is sweet and sour, and the very soft blood red flesh is sweet and syrupy. The white seed is very large and is in the centre of the fruit.

The roots are long and grow straight down, and overall the tree is sturdy and rigid.

Forests of this species feature the trees packed together, with grassy ground between them.
