This small creeper is a fast growing plant, with the largest known specimen reaching a length of 8 feet (2.4 meters) and growing as high as 343 feet (104.5 meters).

It takes 4 months for the burgundy stems to mature, by which point they often have a diameter of 3 cm (1.2 inches) and are tough and woody.

The wide, fuzzy leaves reach up to 3 inches (8 cm) in length. They are red at the bottom and indigo with orange streaks at the top, and have tattered edges.

It is suitable for making strong rope
It can absorb up to 18 times its own weight in water.
