Crimson Spineleaf

This huge leaf succulent grows up to 121 feet (36.9 meters) tall. The fan-like stem is brown, and is covered in large amounts of flexible bronze spines. The tattered-edged, slender, pointed leaves are generally crimson. Handfuls of them grow from the base in a random bunch. The leaves are hardy, but take little effort to detach.

It is slow growing, taking 30 years to reach maturity. Once mature, a handful of flowers, with petals that are pink at the sides and pink at the center, grow at the top, reappearing once every 4 years. The flower head is largely flat with 44 widely spaced narrow petals. It has a weak scent that smells like grass cuttings.

The leaf succulent's skin is tough, the lilac flesh is slimy, and the brilliant purple sap is thin.
