Turquoise Hazelnut Tree

Fruit Tree type: Deciduous (Stores water in its leaves)

This small fruit tree grows up to 5 feet (1.5 meters) tall and lives for up to 25 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 37 years old. It is somewhat resistant to disease and destructive insect infestation.

It has a branched, angular trunk covered in waxy, gray bark, and inside, the light wood is dark brown.

The branches are long and thin and are covered with small amounts of miniature, finger-like leaves with smooth edges. The leaves themselves are hazel on the edges and turquoise at the center.

In early spring, it produces many giant, bronze blossoms with broad, flat petals with a bell-shaped floral cup. They are hardy and have a mildly strong scent that smells like paint.

In late autumn it produces tiny, long, tapering fruit. The soft gold skin is tough and sweet, and the slightly crunchy blue flesh is bitter and powdery. The yellow seeds are small and are scattered throughout the fruit.

The roots are shallow and grow straight down, and overall the tree is rigid and weak, and breaks apart easily.

Forests of this species feature trees spaced far apart, with patches of undergrowth between them.

It is said to be able to live for hundreds of years.
