Waterstem Flower

Flower type: Perennial (Stores water in its stem)

This big flower grows up to 5.4 feet (1.7 meters) tall. Its grey stems grow in bunches of 6 and are thick with a curved tip, and the small, gray-green leaves are stiff, pointed with jagged edges. Many leaves grow at the base of the stem, and a pair of leaves grow at the base of the flower head.

A single small flower sits at the end of the stem. The flowers are 21 cm (8.3 inches) wide, with petals that are deep orange on the edges and pink at the center. The flower head is an uncoordinated mess of 52 curved petals. They are very delicate.

It has a mildly strong scent that smells like fruity, and it has very little pollen. It is a self-pollinator, but is enjoyed by several specific types of insect.

It releases hallucinogenic smoke when burned.
It is suitable for making baskets and the like
It usually houses a colony of beneficial insects.
