Bluebell Fruit Tree

Fruit Tree type: Deciduous (Grows along the ground or other low surfaces.)

This small fruit tree grows up to 5 feet (1.5 meters) tall and lives for up to 25 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 46 years old. It is somewhat resistant to disease and destructive insect infestation.

It has a knobbly, crooked trunk covered in ridged, light gray bark, and inside, the dense wood is copper-coloured.

The branches trail down towards the ground and are covered with small amounts of large, finger-like leaves with smooth edges. The leaves themselves are turquoise and sky blue.

In early spring, it produces handfuls of small, dark brown blossoms with spear shaped petals with a bell-shaped floral cup. They are sturdy and have a strong scent that smells like petrol.

In late summer it produces small, long, narrow fruit. The sticky washed-out blue skin is tough and edible when roasted; it is overwhelmingly savoury, and the very soft intense yellow flesh is bitter and sour and dry. The grey seed is very large and is in the centre of the fruit.

The roots are shallow and grow straight down, and overall the tree is rigid and weak, and breaks apart easily.

Forests of this species feature well-spaced trees, with the space between filled with undergrowth.

The leaves and petals are often used to make tea.
