Clinging Hazel

This short fruit tree grows up to 6 feet (1.8 meters) tall and lives for up to 35 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 49 years old. It is not very resistant to disease and destructive insect infestation.

It has a knobbly, straight trunk covered in delicate, ridged, light gray bark, and inside, the dense wood is black.

The tangled mess of branches are long and slender and are covered with handfuls of small, circular leaves with smooth edges. The leaves themselves are green and brown.

In early spring, it produces copious amounts of medium-sized, white blossoms with pleated petals. They are sturdy and have a scent whose strength depends on external factors, such as soil quality and rain frequency that smells like baby powder.

In early winter it produces small, needle-like fruit. The sticky hazel skin is stretchy and edible when cooked; it is overwhelmingly sweet, and the crunchy copper flesh is sweet and powdery. The black seeds are small and are located in the centre of the fruit.

The roots are long and grow straight down, and overall the tree is sturdy and difficult to uproot.

Forests of this species feature the trees packed together densely, with the space between them filled with thick undergrowth.
