It takes 22 months for the green stems to mature, by which point they often have a diameter of 2 inches (5 cm) and are hard and brittle.

The fan-like, smooth leaves reach up to 1.2 feet (36 cm) in length. They are found in crimson and hazel varieties, and have ripped edges.
