Amber Spine Caudex

Succulent type: Caudiciform (Stores water in the thickened base of its stem)

This modest-sized caudiciform grows up to 5 feet (1.5 meters) tall. The spear shaped stem is yellow-green, and is covered in thousands of rigid amber spines. The angular, grey trunk can grow to as much as 5 feet (1.5 meters) in diameter in the middle. Its hazel or violet branches are very long and thick and start growing a quarter of the way up the stem.

The sparse amounts of smooth-edged, thick leaves are orange on the edges and gold at the center. They are rigid, but do not detach easily.

It is very slow growing, taking 30 years to reach maturity. Once mature, several flowers with each petal a slightly different shade of light brown grow at the top, reappearing once every 10 years. The flower head is made up of handfuls of petals; the lower layer of petals are flat, while the upper layers form a tight tube. It has a fairly strong scent that smells like a man.

The caudiciform's skin is tough, the bronze flesh is soft, and the black sap is thin.

It is suitable for creating fine, soft textiles
The colour changes depends on whether the soil is acidic or alkaline.
Once on fire, it burns very quickly.
