Bloodfruit Tree

This huge fruit tree grows up to 61 feet (18.6 meters) tall and lives for up to 20 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 52 years old. It is somewhat resistant to disease and destructive insect infestation.

It has a long and flexible, straight trunk covered in delicate, cracked, copper-coloured bark, and inside, the light wood is light brown.

The thin clumps of branches are tall, rigid and upright and are covered with handfuls of giant, perforated leaves with jagged edges. The leaves themselves are either amber, or crimson with lilac streaks.

In early spring, it produces clusters of small, black blossoms with spear shaped petals. They detach easily and have an intense scent that smells like blood.

In late autumn it produces , shield-shaped fruit. The smooth peach skin is peel-able and inedible, and the very soft crimson flesh is very sour and very juicy. The hazel seeds are small and are scattered throughout the fruit.

The roots spread far and go deep underground, and overall the tree is rigid and brittle.

Forests of this species feature trees spaced far apart, with the space between them filled with thick undergrowth.
