Copperleaf Tree

Fruit Tree type: Deciduous (Stores water in its stem)

This modest-sized fruit tree grows up to 19 feet (5.8 meters) tall and lives for up to 45 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 54 years old. It is not very resistant to disease and destructive insect infestation.

It has a sturdy, crooked trunk covered in paper-thin, knobbly, black bark, and inside, the medium-dense wood is copper-coloured.

The tangled mess of branches trail down across the ground and are covered with large amounts of small, very narrow and elongated leaves with smooth edges. The leaves themselves are either grey or slate, with olive patches.

In early spring, it produces many bunches of giant, purple blossoms with V-shaped petals with a tube-like floral cup. They are sturdy and have the faintest scent that smells like garlic.

In early summer it produces tiny, needle-like fruit. The fuzzy beige skin is delicate and inedible, and the crunchy green flesh is sour and syrupy. The intense red seeds are small and are bunched at the top of the fruit.

The roots spread far and go deep underground, and overall the tree is sturdy, flexible, and difficult to uproot or break.

Forests of this species feature the trees packed together, with the space between filled with undergrowth.

It is difficult to kill and will quickly regrow if cut.
