Indigo

This giant fruit tree grows up to 63 feet (19.2 meters) tall and lives for up to 25 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 38 years old. It is very resistant to disease and destructive insect infestation.

It has a wide, straight trunk covered in paper-thin, smooth, yellow-brown bark, and inside, the dense wood is mahogany-coloured.

The branches are short, rigid and upright and are covered with very large amounts of tiny, very thin leaves with wavy edges. The leaves themselves are copper on the sides and purple at the center.

In early spring, it produces thousands of medium-sized, indigo blossoms with circular petals with a tube-like floral cup. They detach easily and have a scent whose strength depends on external factors, such as soil quality and rain frequency that smells like citrus.

In early winter it produces small, pleated fruit. The crispy azure skin is peel-able and salty, and the slightly crunchy copper flesh is bitter and very juicy. The red seeds are small and are bunched at the top of the fruit.

The roots are long and grow straight down, and overall the tree is rigid and weak, and breaks apart easily.

Forests of this species feature well-spaced trees, with patches of undergrowth between them.
