Blackberry

This short fruit tree grows up to 8 feet (2.4 meters) tall and lives for up to 40 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 46 years old. It is susceptible to disease and destructive insect infestation.

It has a slender, straight trunk covered in hard, silky, silver and white bark, and inside, the very dense wood is pale yellow.

The branches are short and thick and are covered with sparse amounts of giant, pleated leaves with smooth edges. The leaves themselves are black and caramel.

In early spring, it produces bunches of medium-sized, black blossoms with spear shaped petals. They are very delicate and have a scent that varies in strength that smells like paint.

In mid-autumn it produces very large, stiff, pointed fruit. The soft purple skin is stretchy and edible when cooked; it is extremely sour, and the soft blue flesh is savoury and powdery. The green seeds are tiny and are located in the centre of the fruit.

The roots are thick and spread across the surface, as well as underground, and overall the tree is sturdy and rigid.

Forests of this species feature the trees packed together densely, with grassy ground between them.
