Copperflower

Flower type: Biennial (Stores water in the thickened base of its stem)

This short flower grows up to 4 inches (10 cm) tall. Its silver stem is thin, and the tiny, gray leaves are black on the underside and are slender, pointed with serrated edges. The leaves alternate on the stem from the base up to about halfway.

A single medium-sized flower sits at the end of the stem. The flowers are 4 cm (1.6 inches) wide, with petals that are copper in the center, vivid purple in the middle and bold yellow at the edges. The flower head is shaped like a bowl made up of dozens of widely spaced, narrow petals. They detach easily.

It has a faint scent that smells like blood, and it has a fair amount of pollen. It is pollinated by a small species of bird.
