Red Trumpet Flower

Flower type: Biennial (Grows along the ground or other low surfaces.)

This short flower grows up to 5 inches (13 cm) tall. Its red stem is very thick, and the huge, lime green leaves are cylindrical with smooth edges. Many leaves grow along the entire length of the stem.

3 to 8 small flowers grow on alternate sides up the length of the stem. The flowers are 3 cm (1.2 inches) wide, with petals that are black on the edges and drab red at the center. The flower head is shaped like a trumpet with 44 widely spaced, narrow petals. They detach easily.

It has a weak scent that smells like pot-purri, and it has very little pollen, but can cause allergic reactions. It is pollinated by a small species of bird.


It is suitable for making baskets and the like
It is almost impossible to grow from cuttings.
