Copperberry

This small fruit tree grows up to 9 feet (2.7 meters) tall and lives for up to 10 years, with the oldest known specimen being around 26 years old. It is very susceptible to disease and insect infestation.

It has a narrow, wonky trunk covered in thin, waxy, copper-coloured bark, and inside, the hard wood is black with white speckles.

The sparse amount of branches trail down towards the ground and are covered with very large amounts of tiny, thick leaves with smooth edges. The leaves themselves are purple and magenta.

In early spring, it produces handfuls of giant, brown blossoms with asymmetrical petals. They are very delicate and have a delicate scent that smells like rich perfume.

In late summer it produces small, oval fruit. The waxy light grey skin is delicate and edible when roasted; it is savoury, and the soft cyan flesh is salty and powdery. The light brown seed is very large and is in the centre of the fruit.

The roots are thick and spread across the surface, as well as underground, and overall the tree is sturdy and rigid.

Forests of this species feature the trees packed together, with the space between them filled with thick undergrowth.
