Red Velvet

Succulent type: Caudiciform (Stores water in the thickened base of its stem)

This big caudiciform grows up to 9 feet (2.7 meters) tall. The stiff, pointed stem is green, and is covered in copious amounts of fine, dark grey, hair-like spines. The wavy, blood red trunk can grow to as much as 9 feet (2.7 meters) in diameter at the top. Its hazel branches are tall, rigid and upright and start growing at the base the stem.

The large amounts of smooth-edged, circular leaves are either blue, or blood red with dark grey streaks. They are light, but easily come away when pulled.

It is very slow growing, taking 14 years to reach maturity. Once mature, a handful of flowers, with petals that are copper at the sides and lime at the center, grow at the top, reappearing every year. The flower head is made up of many petals in raised layers. It has a powerful scent that smells like skunk spray.

The caudiciform's skin is delicate, the yellow flesh is leathery, and the peach sap is thin.

The sap causes itchiness of the skin
It actively smothers and kills off other plants.
It is suitable for use as a construction material
