Crimson Hazel

This enormous shrub grows up to 15 feet (4.6 meters) tall and lives for around 10 years. It is very susceptible to disease and insect infestation.

It has several flexible, crooked stems covered in wrinkled, yellow bark, and the wood inside is dark brown.

The branches are short and slender with hundreds of twigs that and are covered with handfuls of tiny, pleated, leaves with jagged edges. The leaves themselves are emerald with indigo tips, hardy and clammy.

It produces copious amounts of medium-sized, crimson flowers with finger-like petals. They are very delicate and have a faint scent that smells like meat. In early autumn it forms medium-sizedhazel aril (seeds with fleshy covers).
